Kody Davies Interview – US Debut, Weight and Future Hopes

By @HighGuardBoxing

‘King’ Kody Davies from Blackwood built up a solid trade in the amateur ranks. He is a three-time amateur Welsh champion, 2015 British champion and represented Wales at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Having turned professional, Kody has developed great chemistry and good wins under his coach, former world champion Gavin Rees. Some might recognise the rising Welsh talent from their televisions as Kody has appeared on Dave and Sky Sports respectively, with the hope that he can return to British screens after his US debut on FOX.
With a seventh straight win on Liam Williams undercard this past Friday, I was happy to catch up with Kody Davies to discuss his future.

Q: You got your 7th win tonight and secured the stoppage against a very durable opponent in Jevgenijs Andrejevs (10-98-3), do you think that sends a statement to your division?

Kody: Yes, that’s a statement in itself. He is a tough guy and rarely gets stopped. I take a positive from that, but this fight is purely preparation for my fight in America on the undercard of Victor Ortiz vs John Molina Jr. It kept me in the gym and now I’m ready to step up.

Q: Yes, so the big news has been announced that you’ll be travelling for your first fight on US soil. Will you face a similar opponent to Andrejevs?

Kody: No, in Los Angeles there will be an improvement in opponent. We aren’t sure of a name yet, but I am just excited to showcase what I can do in front of a massive audience and on a big card. I will be against a game opponent.

[Since this interview, BoxRec have scheduled Kody against Quinton Rankin (12-5-2)]

Q: Your fight in America will be your first eight rounder, are you comfortable going this distance and how long do you think it will be before you start going the 10/12 round distance and start challenging for titles?

Kody: I’ve just come off the back of my first two six rounders. I feel that I am progressing and moving along nicely. The main goal at the moment is just not to take a backwards step and to keep moving forwards.

Q: It looks like that fight will be broadcast on FOX, this is of course a chance to show what you can do. With opportunities like this, do you see yourself fighting in America more often after this or will you try to base yourself in the UK?

Kody: I love boxing in Wales, it’s my home country. I love the fans and the support that I get here. It’s a great feeling to walk out to [Delilah -] Tom Jones and to carry the Welsh flag on my back. On the other hand, I cannot wait to get out there and broadcast myself to the whole world to show everybody what I can do. Before I go any further I would like to give all my thanks to God because without him none of this would be possible, I also give a lot of credit to my family and girlfriend. A special thanks goes to my sponsors @RichieMorgan123, @LeeBatchelor5, @PuroFitFood,@ManMadeGym, @Bavos_Barber and @Empire_Protape.

Q: Final question Kody, you’ve campaigned previously at super middleweight but tonight you were fighting at light heavyweight. What weight do you think you will settle at when you start challenging for titles?

Kody: I am lucky enough to be in the position to be able to make both super-middleweight and light heavyweight, this puts me in a great position. My team and I will discuss what route is best but financial gains and titles play a big part. I am strong in both weights so I’m excited to see what I can add to the divisions.

I’d like to thank Kody Davies for taking the time to speak to @HighGuardBoxing and for @MTKGlobal for letting me be part of the show, check out my Twitter and WordPress for more content.
