Who Will Amir Khan Fight Next

By Henry Walter

Amir Khan beat Samuel Vargas via a unanimous decision on Saturday to mark his return to welterweight. Khan used the Vargas win to signal his intent to compete for honours in the stacked division. Having firmly reestablished himself, after his 2016 loss to Saul Alvarez, Khan now has a wealth of options available to him. Listed below are three opponents Khan could take on along with scores for the potential risk and reward they present to him.

1. Manny Pacquiao

Khan has been chasing a fight with boxing legend Pacquiao for a long time. At thirty-nine, and after recent losses to Floyd Mayweather and Jeff Horn, Pacquiao is not the threat he once was at world level. However his win over Lucas Matthysse proved he is still a formidable opponent capable of beating top fighters.

His hand speed and power would undoubtedly prove problematic for Khan and many would struggle to envisage a Khan win. A Pacquiao fight would give Khan the opportunity to massively increase his standing but would be a very high risk proposition.

Risk: 5/5
Reward: 5/5
Likelihood: 3/5

2. Kell Brook

A Khan-Brook fight has been talked about for years. The all British super fight would easily fill a stadium and would garner worldwide interest. Brook certainly has pushed for the fight, Khan meanwhile seems reluctant.

Brook is a former IBF Welterweight Champion. Slick boxing skills coupled with world-class power have seen him beat a host of top names. Khan is the faster of the two and its seemingly a 50/50 contest on paper.

The winner would receive tremendous prestige and the fight would be extremely lucrative for both men.

Risk: 3/5
Reward: 4/5
Likelihood: 5/5

3. Danny Garcia

The former Welterweight World Champion already holds a win over Khan and he has talked of revenge ever since their 2012 Contest.

A Garcia rematch would be very interesting and would make reasonable sense for both men. Garcia is coming off a close loss to Shawn Porter and the Khan fight would offer him a chance to rebuild with a win over a marquee name.

Khan was beating Garcia in 2012 before the American used his power and timing to take over and stop him. It’s a result that has clearly bothered Khan ever since and a rematch would give him the chance to prove he can avenge defeats.

Risk: 4/5
Reward: 4/5
Likelihood: 1/5

Boxing fans will await Khan’s next move with bated breath for win or lose he always offers excitement and value for money. The next stage of his career should prove very interesting.
