Amir Khan Looks To Overcome Vargas-Kell Brook Next?
By Dan McConnell
Former WBA and IBF Super Light-Welterweight Champion Amir Khan (32-4) continues his comeback with his 2nd fight after a two year lay-off. Khan will face off against Columbian prospect Samuel Vargas in Birmingham this Saturday night.
The 31 year-old’s comeback has been a long time coming, from dealing with personal problems to successfully knocking out Phil Lo Greco in April 21st 2018 in 39 seconds, and now turning his attention to Samuel Vargas who is ranked 10th by the WBA.
Khan is a fighter who has never backed down from a contest this shows on his record with huge box office contests against Danny Garcia and Canelo Alvarez.
It is expected that if Khan comes through this contest his attention will turn to former IBF Welterweight Champion Kell Brook (37-2) again to try re-kindle their spark to book a huge night for British boxing.
Brook is another fighter who has grit determination and a steel attitude that’s also shown on his record. Defeats against the most feared man in boxing right now Gennady Golovkin and top American Errol Spence Jr prove this. The Sheffield-born fighter suffered eye socket injuries in both bouts.
Khan and Brook have not yet crossed paths, but their opponents have in Canelo v GGG and Danny Garcia v Shawn Porter which will take place this weekend. I really don’t think either fighter will want to take on the winner or loser between Garcia and Porter so what’s next?
I believe this blockbuster all-British contest, which is one that has been teased before needs to happen right now or it never will.
Both fighters are in a limbo in their careers with Khan only in his second contest with a two year layoff while Brook has lost his IBF Welterweight title against Errol Spence.
Kell Brook has struggled to make the weight at Welterweight so the fight may have to take place at Light Middleweight in which both fighters have some experience within this division.
Khan shouldn’t look past Vargas, but a fighter of his stature who has been riding the crest of the hype train for the majority of his career is definitely a favourite in the bookies eyes for this contest.
Brook vs Khan has seemed to be a fight that has evaded the fight fans and looks very unlikely to happen.
Top Welterweight talents in Terrence Crawford, Errol Spence, Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter seem to have their sight set on bigger things. Would a Danny Garcia rematch tempt Khan? I hope not, there is only one man I want Khan to face.
