The British Heavyweight Scene
Not so long ago British Heavyweight boxers had a horizontal reputation as a result of a near century of failed bids to win a version of the world heavyweight title.
We had our moments, glorious attempts that ultimately ended in failure mixed with other less than glorious tilts at the biggest prize in boxing.
But thanks to the likes of Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, David Haye, Tyson Fury and others, that has thankfully changed, and now Anthony Joshua sits at the top of the heavyweight ranks to keep the momentum going.
Despite the recent retirement of Haye, we have plenty of other heavyweight hopes to challenge, maybe more depth than we have previously seen.
Fury of course has returned and should all the plans fall into place, will later this year face Deontay Wilder to reclaim what he never lost in the ring.
Dillian Whyte should also get his chance in 2019, Whyte looks likely to get the call for the April date with Joshua, if Joshua gets past Alexander Povetkin later this month.
Hughie Fury has got his world title eliminator coming up and Dereck Chisora is back in the picture after his recent career saving win.
The likes of the unbeaten prospects Joe Joyce and Daniel Dubois add more depth and both could be in the world title picture inside the next 18 months.
Nathan Gorman also unbeaten, could be a sleeper, the one that is going under the radar and he has his sights set on Dubois in a potential fight of Frank Warren prospects sometime in 2019.
Joshua may sit at the top of most people’s heavyweight rankings but outside of Wilder most of his challengers going forward could be from these shores, how times have changed.
