Floyd Mayweather: Are We Too Harsh
It’s been just over a year since we saw Floyd Mayweather in action, and despite nonsensical and never going to happen talk of a move to MMA, it looks like Mayweather is finally retired for good.
Despite an unblemished record of 50-0, is Mayweather one of those fighters that we don’t really appreciate until he is gone.
The critics point to his flaws as a man, but there are plenty of other fighters with similar indiscretions that are never mentioned and don’t seem to harm how we perceive them, Mayweather suffers where others don’t.
But does his record and his many achievements inside a boxing ring not get the respect it deserves.
When you claim to be the best ever, others will find reasons to argue that point. When you flaunt the money you have, it will turn many off and hinders what you have achieved.
Mayweather won’t care of course what people think of him, but the different personas have harmed him in the public eye.
Many will argue his style of hit and not be hit went too far, but that surely is kind of the point of the Noble Art.
But Mayweather as a boxer was some fighter, and despite the flaws, he deserves his due.
He fought Manny Pacquiao years later than he should have, but you get the impression that regardless of when they fought, it would have been the same. Canelo got the fight may be a little too soon in his career but as with Pacquiao you just know timing is irrelevant.
Mayweather defeated his two greatest rivals with such ease that it left no doubt that he is by far the greatest fighter of his era, despite what his many critics may argue.
Yes, Mayweather cynically picked certain opponents, but others did the same, Mayweather hardly invented that particular process.
So is Mayweather the best ever, not for me, I have no doubt that Sugar Ray Leonard would have found a way too beat him and a peak Roberto Duran would have done the same.
But that is my opinion Mayweather will disagree if course, but regardless of where he sits in the mythical rankings, Mayweather deserves the respect even if that respect is begrudgingly given.
