This afternoon I attended the World Boxing Super Series press conference in London which formally announced the long-awaited final of the World Boxing Super Series between Callum Smith and George Groves in Saudi Arabia on the 28th September.

Rumours that Groves, who suffered a shoulder injury in his semi-final win over Chris Eubank Jr, would be forced to pull out of the final have proved unfounded and Groves confirmed that he is one hundred percent fit ahead of the contest.

Groves and Smith both displayed a relaxed and calm demeanour during the press conference to officially announce the contest. Groves in particular answered questions directed at him with a slight air of boredom.

Both men showed considerable respect for the other and the event was devoid of animosity. Smith stated that Groves represents the hardest test of his career to date before adding that he has wanted this fight for a long time.

Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher openly admitted that he is a fan of George Groves and claimed that researching his fighter’s rival’s previous contests had been very enjoyable. He then echoed Smith’s claim that the Liverpudlian will ultimately prove the better man, emphasising that every time Smith has stepped up in the past he has performed exceptionally well.

Kalle Sauerland, the events promoter, was keen to point out that the card will mark the first time a professional boxing match of this magnitude has been held in Saudi Arabia. Sauerland then remarked that this proves the sport is now truly global.

As well as Groves’ WBA title, Sauerland announced that the Ring Magazine Super-middleweight title would also be presented to the winner.

The exciting all British clash will now determine the number one fighter in the division and it will be very hard for many to pick a winner.
