UFC Calgary Re-Cap:

Dustin Poirier Settles The Score With Eddie Alvarez:

MMA: UFC 211-Alvarez vs Poirier

Eddie Alvarez (29-6) rolled the dice entering the fight on the last fight of his current UFC contract and it might be a decision he regrets, throwing the 12-to-6 elbow might be another decision he regrets.

The illegal elbow cost him an advantageous position in the 2nd round of their rematch in Calgary and Dustin Poirier made him pay for it, with the ending coming soon after. Poirier (24-5) let loose with knees and punches and forced the stoppage at the 4:05 point of the round and in the process ending their rivalry and moving a step closer to a title shot in the lightweight division.

Poirier edged the opener and looked the sharper fighter on the feet, at range was always going to be where he needed it, and Alvarez despite having success knew he needed to put Poirier on the mat at some point. Alvarez survived several guillotine attempts, a fence grab helped his cause, before eventually gaining top position until the illegal elbow cost him the position and the fight.

With Khabib and McGregor looking to settle their issues towards the end of the year Poirier will have to wait for his chance but a fight with Tony Ferguson would speed up the process and a win would remove any doubt who should be next in line.

Whatever happens with Alvarez and a new UFC contract the realisation might be that Alvarez’s title days are probably over in a snake pit of a UFC lightweight division, he faces a long road back.
