Cage Warriors Heads to Birmingham:
By Jon Prentice
Cage Warriors have today announced that they will be making their long-awaited return to Birmingham on October 20th 2018 following an 8 year stint since their last visit, with the Genting Arena playing host to some of the best MMA talent Europe has to offer.
The event will mark the 9th showing for Cage Warriors this year, with five events having being held already and four more being scheduled for the coming months in London, Cardiff, Liverpool and now Birmingham.
The promotion last visited the city in 2010 for Cage Warriors 37: Right to Fight, with local talent and now UFC middleweight stand out Tom Breese competing on the card and picking up a 1st round submission victory. The card also featured the likes of Jim Wallhead, Pascal Krauss and Sarah Moras who also all went on to compete in the premier mixed martial arts promotion.
Birmingham and the surrounding areas are currently a breeding ground for mixed martial arts competitors with the likes of Leon Edwards and Tom Breese shining in the UFC and Fabian Edwards looking to be a potential future world champion in the making. Cage Warriors should have a wealth of talent to choose from for the upcoming event and It would already appear that featherweight contender Aiden Lee is set to feature on the card. With the likes of Jai Herbert, Tim Wilde, Jake Hadley and many more training in the city it has the potential to be stacked with top local talent who all have the potential to make it to the big time.
One local stand out who does not look like he will be competing on the card however is bantamweight Chris Miah. Miah, who most recently competed at ACB 87, has declared that he is on a hiatus from the sport, citing health concerns and the want to focus his attention on other opportunities outside of the sport as the reason for his decision.
Following news of the announcement, Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan stated
“We’re always on the hunt for the next breakout U.K stars, and October 20th will be no different,” says Boylan. “We’ve given fighters from all over Europe the chance to showcase their skills in their hometown. We’re excited to now give that opportunity in Birmingham, an exciting city for the promotion and for the sport.”
On a personal level, this is an event I am extremely looking forward being a Birmingham boy myself, and it is very much overdue given the amount of MMA talent the city is producing.
Tickets go on sale for Cage Warriors 98 on Friday July 27th.
