Is this Cormier’s chance to gain GOAT status?

By Kieran Cobley

With UFC Light Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier just days away from his chance of becoming a double champ, when he takes on Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 for the Heavyweight title, fans are adamant that this is his opportunity to cement his place as one of the best MMA fighters of all time.

Cormier goes into this clash after beating Volkan Oezdemir in his last title defence, and is on a five fight winning streak (minus a no contest with Jon Jones), and has proved his versatility time and time again, with victories via knockout, submission and decision.

Not only this, but Cormier is undefeated when fighting at heavyweight, and holds the distinction of being the winner of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, something he did on short notice when he entered the tournament as an alternate.

Should DC win this super fight on Saturday, he will also be only the second double champ in UFC history, the only other member of the double champ club being Conor McGregor, and whilst McGregor has arguably let the fame get to him, Cormier has remained humble and dignified, showing his kids the right way in life whilst also taking a high school wrestling coach job, where he will be able to impart his Olympic level wrestling knowledge to a new generation.

Let’s not beat around the bush either, Cormier is going to be the biggest test Miocic has ever faced, with his combination of Olympic level wrestling and an excellent striking game, which has seen him take 9 KO/TKO victories, DC is a more well-rounded fighter than Stipe has ever faced.

This to me is the best chance of Cormier cementing his status of the GOAT, he has a 20-1 record with one no contest, with the loss and no contest coming from Jon Jones, the 2nd fight was reversed to a No Contest when Jones failed a drugs test. With wins over the likes of Gustafson, Anderson Silva, and Dan Henderson, amongst other big names and the possibility of being one of the very few fighters to hold two belts at two different weight classes, it’s now or never for DC.
