Boxing Politics Wins Again: Joshua vs Wilder
Probably depending on which fighter your affections lie, will determine who you blame for the failure to get the deal done.
But at the end of the day it doesn’t matter who or why, the facts are it’s not happening, at least not yet.
At the start of 2018 3 fights topped my wish list.
Amir Khan vs Kell Brook
Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez 2
Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder
Khan vs Brook won’t happen this year, if at all. My view hasn’t changed regarding this potential all British blockbuster, one fighter wants it the other doesn’t.
The rematch between Golovkin and Canelo is happening. The 1st meeting ended in controversy, the rematch starts with a big black cloud hanging over it, but at least it is happening.
But sadly Joshua vs Wilder isn’t, and the chance to yet again have an undisputed world heavyweight champion has gone, that chance might not be there again.
We never got to see Lennox Lewis fight his former Olympic opponent in the pro game, Riddick Bowe preferred to put one of his title belts in a dustbin rather than face Lewis again, in a publicity stunt which fooled nobody.
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao made us wait, and when they did eventually meet, many wished they hadn’t bothered.
Boxing really does shoot itself in the foot at times, the biggest fight around can’t get made, and yet again boxing’s loyal fan base lose out.
Where there is a will, there is usually a way, how much of a genuine will there was to make this fight, I will let you decide.
