Holly Holm vs Christina Domke
By Henry Walter
Holly Holm is one of the greatest female boxers of all time. After turning professional in 2002 Holm captured world titles in three weight classes and amassed a professional boxing record of 33(9ko’s)-2-3.
In 2011 Holm crossed over to mixed martial arts competition and signed to fight contender Christina Domke whose MMA record stood at 4-1.
Holm’s fight with Domke aroused a great deal of curiosity amongst fight fans who were eager to see how such a talented boxer would fare against a seasoned MMA contender under MMA rules.
Holm used her boxing skills to dominate the fight, landing numerous straight left hands out of her southpaw stance whilst utilising clever footwork to avoid punishment.
Holm (who has also fought three professional kickboxing bouts) brought the fight to an end at just under four minutes into the second round. A fast flurry of punches followed by a leg kick saw the fight waved off.
Six more MMA victories followed for Holm and after less than four years of fighting in MMA competition she was signed by the UFC.
After two wins in UFC competition Holm signed to face the dominant bantamweight champion of the division and UFC poster girl Ronda Rousey. Rousey had an MMA record of 12-0 and was known for her grappling and Judo prowess. Such had been her prior success that some UFC writers had even claimed she capable of besting some male fighters, such as boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, in a no holds barred fight.

Holm, 11-0, started the fight on her toes and was able to land jabs and hard left crosses seemingly at will. Rousey seemed to have no answer to Holm’s punches and boxing footwork. After a brutal first round Rousey stalked Holm in the second but quickly ran into trouble. A straight left hand knocked her onto her knees and as she turned away Holm finished the fight with a leg kick to the head. The win saw Holm become the first fighter in history to become a boxing world champion and a UFC champion.
