Boxing’s Welterweight Division:

Boxing’s Welterweight Division:

Boxing is currently riding another one of its boom periods, some weight division’s are stronger than others, one of the strongest around at the moment is the welterweight division.

Terrence Crawford introduced himself to the welterweight ranks this past weekend with a dominant performance in taking the WBO welterweight title from Jeff Horn. Without Crawford plying his trade in the 147 ranks, the welterweight’s is still one snake pit of a division, but Crawford gives it a little more. Crawford’s resume and his rating as one of the top 3 pound for pound fighters on the planet adds a little more star power to the division.

Two of the old guard Manny Pacquiao and Lucas Matthysse fight in July, while it is often dangerous to compare the like for like, but the way Crawford handled Horn, and the way Pacquiao struggled with Horn, suggests where Pacquiao is today compared to the likes of Crawford and Errol Spence Jr.

Amir Khan has recently returned, and despite how good he looked in his comeback, far tougher tests await the Bolton fighter. But when you have the name and some people see you as being on the slide and supposedly fragile around the whiskers, the phone will ring. Khan is a test for most, and if he hasn’t slipped, then he could be a real danger man in the division.

Danny Garcia (34-1) will return against Shawn Porter (28-2-1)in August in a battle of former champions and while both I feel are a step behind the elite of the division, they are still nonetheless very much a threat.

Keith Thurman (28-0) hasn’t fought due to injury since he beat Garcia last March, and in beating Garcia he has every right to claim he is the best welterweight on the planet. However Crawford has just stated him claim, but Errol Spence Jr is perhaps the uncrowned king.

Spence Jr (23-0) beat Kell Brook last May in Sheffield to win the IBF version and looked sensational in January stopping Lamont Peterson, Spence Jr returns this weekend against Carlos Ocampo.

With the likes of Spence Jr, Crawford, Thurman and the rest we can safely say we have some fantastic fights to look forward to, but who will come out as the true king of the division.
