The return of the Mac – Gypsy King aims to be back in the mix

By Connor Hutton

Down and out, depression, drugs and rapid weight gain, Tyson Fury has been through it in recent years. When you’re at the bottom of the barrel it takes some guts and hard work to get where you want to be. That aim is becoming the Heavyweight Champion of the world. Fury’s comeback has just started, he has tackled the demons of his past head on and seems to have come out the other side happier than ever. The Gypsy King will make his first appearance since 2015 on June 9th in Manchester.

It looked like Fury would never get a boxing licence again after his drug test issues, failing for two separate substances (one being deemed performance enhancing). For everything that has happened in Fury’s recent timeline whether you are fan or not, he will be back in the mix for world titles in 2019.

Even if Fury is half the fighter he was in 2015, the heavyweight division is poor at the moment and he would still be a top five contender, it won’t be long before he has his shot. If he is to win on June 9th expect him to be added to the top 15 rankings in at least one of the four governing bodies.

The opponent for June 9th will be Albanian Sefer Seferi (23-1). Some may have criticised the choice of the comeback, but we must remember he has been out the ring for two and a half years and is fully entitled to a few fights of this standard. He was never going to be fighting a prime Mike Tyson straight off the bat. It could have been much worse than a cruiserweight with a winning record as we’ve seen time and time again in boxing comebacks.

Where does this leave the rest of the division? Well it doesn’t matter who you are, not one top heavyweight will want anything to do with Fury at his best. They know how awkward and horrible he is in the ring and without a title there is too much risk and not enough reward of fighting him. We forget he seems to have been around for a long while, but he is only 29 years old. Only one year older than unified champion Anthony Joshua. There is plenty of time for Fury to win world titles.

It does look like the Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder fight will be happening sooner rather than later. The chance of an undisputed world champion is a real possibility. If Joshua was to come through this fight which he would be favourite for, then what chance is there of any other active Heavyweight of beating him? The only fight fans would be interested in after this would be Joshua vs Fury, whether that would ever happen without being mandated is a completely different story.

The division needs some excitement though, there is only one fight people are interested in between the two title holders. The rest of them are so far behind they pose little threat.

One man causes excitement and has the ability to throw a spanner in the works. It’s happening exclusive on BT Sports, The Return Of The Mac, June 9th.
