Do We Have To Wait ‘Till’ Something Happens:
There is widespread shock at the footage released yesterday of Darren Till trying to make-weight for his fight with Stephen Thompson, for me why the outrage.
Everyone in the sport knows this happens, it’s hardly breaking news, there are many similar videos out there already, showing similar shocking scenes.
Till has admitted he cuts around 40lbs to make welterweight, how can anyone not see this needs resolving, do we really have to see a high-profile death to do something.
Early morning weigh ins to allow fighters longer to rehydrate and improve fighter safety, but in reality does the complete opposite.
Yes fighters should be fighting near their actual normal weight, but they are being allowed to abuse their bodies and without much doubt putting themselves at real risk.
Think about it for a minute, fighters are being allowed to severely dehydrate their bodies and then the very next day they are getting punched and kicked in the head.
The early morning weigh ins need scrapping immediately, more weight divisions might help, at least to a point, but fighters will still try to gain as big an advantage as they can.
More stringent pre fight check weigh ins must be implemented, maybe from two weeks out, set agreed target weights fighters must be at to stop drastic weight cutting.
Will something change, it should, but I’m not sure it will until something happens, do we really have to wait for that.
