Darren Till Gets The Win:
The night started badly for the Liverpool crowd when Molly McCann lost in her UFC debut, but Darren Till sent the Liverpool faithful home happy.
Till beat the number 1 ranked welterweight in the world Stephen Thompson on a unanimous decision by scores of 48-47 and 49-46 x2
In an incredibly hard fight to score, Till was given the nod in a tactically absorbing fight.
Both were quite brilliant defensively, which obviously negated their offence.
Till couldn’t quite pin his man down, he couldn’t quite cut his slippery opponent off. While Thompson also struggled to get in range, and was clearly frustrated by his opponent’s style.
As I was watching the fight, I kept thinking that Till could very well lose this by not being aggressive enough, his best weapon was his jab, which he didn’t throw often enough.
Do I agree with the decision, it was incredibly close, Thompson nicked the 1st, Till got the 5th the only clear round of the fight due to a knockdown, the left hand of Till briefly threatening a stoppage. The other 3 rounds take your pick. Taking away the 10 must system, maybe a draw was more reflective of what went down.
Till moves on, and when the new rankings are out it will be interesting where Till is ranked, he missed weight remember.
Spare a thought for Thompson, he took a fight he didn’t have to take, more so when Till missed weight, and he lost a fight most will think he won.
