UFC 224 On Reflection:
I’ve been critical of some PPV offerings from the UFC in the past, however I felt overall UFC 244 delivered. While there has been admittedly zero buzz about it, and the buy rates will reflect that, I think it ticked most of the boxes needed to justify the PPV tag.

Amanda Nunes was thoroughly dominant in her win over Raquel Pennington, so dominant it gives the UFC problems going forward. When the number 1 contender in the bantamweight division is Holly Holm, it highlights the lack of depth in the division. Both Nunes and the featherweight champion Cris Cyborg lack real competition, they need each other.
Pennington was incredibly tough, although not as tough as her corner. Pennington said she was done at the end of the 4th, and that should have been it. I am not a lover of a fighter going on longer than is needed, when all realistic chance of victory has passed, this was one such case.

Kelvin Gastelum is arguably in the wrong weight division, but that looks like it won’t stop him getting a title shot.
Mackenzie Dern looked far better in her 2nd appearance in the UFC. But missing weight by so much raises questions, is she in the wrong weight division, is her preparation what it should be, either way Dern needs to find the answers.
The boo’s rang out at times in the Lyoto Machida Vitor Belfort fight, clearly asking for one of their hero’s to do something, Machida did and added another highlight reel KO to his collection.
It looks like Belfort has finished his career in Brazil, one of the very early pioneers of the sport, Belfort has had a long and sometimes contoversial career, but a place in the Hall of Fame awaits.
