Sam Sexton v Hughie Fury

The British heavyweight scene is pretty vibrant these days with the likes of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and others dominating the headlines, but we have a British heavyweight champion that rarely gets any print.

Tomorrow night in Bolton live on Channel 5 Sam Sexton for once gets the limelight when he defends his British heavyweight title against Hughie Fury.

Sexton (22-4) rated only the 10th best heavyweight in Britain by Boxing Monthly gets a big opportunity in Bolton to prove that ranking is wide of the mark when he takes on the former world title challenger.

Fury (20-1) ranked 5th by the same publication is looking to rebound from his loss to Joseph Parker last September. The loss to Parker for the WBO title was viewed as controversial by some, but in reality he just didn’t do enough.

Both fighters are on different career paths, Fury is looking at getting back into the world title picture and talks of meeting Joshua sometime in the future, while Sexton is perhaps at the level which he is unlikely to better.

To be fair to Sexton, he hasn’t lost since David Price beat him in 2012 and is on a 9 fight winning run including winning the British title last time out against Gary Cornish. The only other man to beat him is Dereck Chisora who has beaten him twice.

The odds seem to indicate that a Fury win is a mere formality, you can get 14-1 if you fancy the upset if you shop around. So the limelight for Sexton might not last for long but the champion might give Fury a better fight than those long odds suggest.
